As we age, it’s common for our lips to lose its natural volume and definition over time. This could be due to a combination of lifestyle and biological factors such as a decrease in collagen and elastic production in the skin, change in bone structure and fat distribution in the face and individual lifestyle factors such as excessive sun exposure and smoking.

The skin on the lips becomes thinner with age, which can make blood vessels beneath the surface more visible. This can give the lips a paler appearance compared to when they were fuller and more plump.

While biological factors such as hormones and genetics are beyond our control, we can take steps in our day to day routine to protect our lips.

So.... what can YOU do to maintain youthful lips?

We all know the importance of sunscreen and I am sure many of us forget to protect our lips with some SPF! (I’m guilty of this) but it is so important!

Prolong UV exposure can damage our delicate lip skin. The damage includes the break down of collagen which is essential for maintaining the fullness of the lips

Smoking decreases blood flow and oxygen to lips which can in turn impair collagen and elastin production, decreasing volume. The repeated tightening of the lips over time can contribute to formation of vertical lines above the lips, diminishing the natural definition.

Smoking can also contribute to darkening of the lips over time. The longevity of lip blush/neutralisation is also reduced if you are a smoker!

With cosmetic tattoo, we cannot add real volume but we can provide improved definition, vibrancy and the illusion of full youthful lips.. However, you can achieve volume by getting lip fillers.

DID YOU KNOW? Many lip fillers contain hyaluronic acid (HA) which attracts and maintains moisture. This means that your lip blush and lip neutralisation can last even longer with fillers!

In conclusion, while the natural ageing process can affect the volume and definition of our lips, there are proactive steps we can take to maintain their youthful appearance. Protecting our lips with SPF 30+, avoiding smoking, and considering cosmetic options like lip blush and lip fillers can all contribute to healthier, fuller-looking lips. Remember, our lips are a delicate and essential part of our face that deserves care and attention. By incorporating these practices into your routine, you can enjoy vibrant and youthful lips for years to come. Give your lips the love they deserve and keep smiling confidently!
